CRISP-DM

A six-phase framework for structuring machine learning projects, from business understanding to deployment.

CRISP-DM (Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining) is the project frame Machine Learning Zoomcamp teaches in its opening module. A machine learning project moves through business understanding, data understanding, data preparation, modeling, evaluation, and deployment — and the course structures every following module along that path.

The module contrasts machine learning systems with rule-based systems: rules work when the logic can be written down; learning from data wins when the logic is implicit, such as predicting a price or a churn probability from historical examples. Learners leave the module with a structured way to frame problems and a reproducible project setup.
